Each week thousands of children go to church – some on a Sunday with their families, many visit churches with their schools, others enjoy going to church for after-school clubs or midweek services, younger children may go to a pre-school service or toddler group.

Behind all these activities is an army of volunteers and a small but growing number of paid specialists – in all, over 1500 people play a part in leading activities for children in churches right across the Diocese. These people, working alongside their clergy, are finding new and exciting ways to nurture children’s faith, bring the Bible to life and enable children to discover and worship God their own way.

Claire Wesley is the Bishop’s Adviser for Children’s Ministry. She offers advice and support to children’s leaders and Parishes to help them develop a successful and growing ministry with children. Workshops and training events on such topics as: Godly Play, Children and Communion, All Age Worship, and Working with Tweenagers (9 – 12’s) are held regularly at venues across the Diocese. Details of forthcoming events are available here.

The protection and welfare of children is of paramount importance in our churches and the Diocese has a comprehensive policy on child protection called ‘God’s Children: Our Diocese’ which is available in the resources section of the website. Everyone who works with children is encouraged to attend training on child protection and sessions are held every month – click here for details.

For anyone who wants to learn more about children’s ministry, get new ideas, be better equipped and have access to the most up-to-date resources and approaches, the Bishop’s Certificate in Children’s Ministry is well worth attending. If you want to speak to Jo about the course or any other aspect of children’s ministry, contact her here.
